  • Sense of community in a blended technology integration course: A design-based research study

    The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning

    This design-based research study explored whether sense of community was maintained while flexibility in the course was increased through an adoption of a unique blended learning model. Results indicate that transitioning to a blended learning environment may be a suitable option to increase flexibility while maintaining a sense of community in a project-based course.

Open Badges provide a new way of issuing credentials to individuals who demonstrate knowledge, skill, or ability in a particular domain.     This article describes the design, development, and implementation of Open Badges into a secondary education preservice course on instructional technology. Open Badges provide a new way of issuing credentials to individuals who demonstrate knowledge, skill, or ability in a particular domain. Badges provide a simple system for communicating a skill along with specific information about the evidence connected with earning the badge. In this paper, we describe the course in detail along with the several iterations of design that resulted in the development of the badge system, along with the challenges faced and lessons learned for future design and use of Open Badges.

  • IPT EdTec - Micro-credentials using Mozilla Open Badges

    The Mozilla Open Badge infrastructure gives us the ability to issue micro-credentials to students. We developed rigorous rubrics to assess students on their mastery of each technology. Once their mastery is established, we issue them an open badge showing that we accredit their skill to a certain point.

    My role in the project was to develop the actual iptedtec.org website, create the badge images, review rubrics for completeness, and develop the issuing platform that links with Mozilla.

  • PM4ID.org - Automatic e-book creation from an online textbook

    - Present

    Project Managers for Instructional Designers (PM4ID) is an open and free online textbook.

    My responsibility was to create a script using Python that scrapes the content from the website each night, compiles it, and then using the Calibre e-book software creating several formats for download. The online textbook can now be downloaded as HTML, an e-book, a Kindle ready e-book, and as a PDF file.
